The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme at Reidsville High School offers a unique educational opportunity for students and the community. By pushing students to think critically and view the world through a global lens, it gives them a massive competitive edge for college and future careers. The program aims to keep students engaged, while giving teachers access to fresh, innovative training. The IB program also helps build strong community ties and develops real-world leadership skills through IB's mandatory CAS (Creativity, Activity, and Service) projects. Ultimately, the IB program lifts the profile of our entire school and sets our students up for long-term success in college and career.

Going the extra mile (GEM) grants

GEM Grants bridge the professional development funding gap, significantly expanding access to personalized, high-value professional development opportunities for awarded Rockingham County Schools teachers. A similar gap exists for classroom resources. While district funding supports core and small-group instructional materials, it rarely extends to supplemental or creative learning initiatives. Consequently, teachers often pay out of pocket to bring innovative ideas to life. GEM Grants relieve this financial burden, empowering teachers to implement dynamic, engaging projects directly in their classrooms without personal cost.

building a sustainable pathway to affordable home ownership

The Down Payment Assistance project marks the beginning of Habitat's long-term commitment to expanding affordable homeownership opportunities throughout Rockingham County. While the immediate impact will help two qualified families overcome one of the final barriers to purchasing a home, the broader vision is to establish a sustainable pathway to affordable homeownership by building strong partnerships with local businesses, financial institutions, faith communities, civic organizations, government leaders, and philanthropic partners. Habitat's homeownership model combines affordable home construction, financial education, sweat equity, and affordable mortgage financing to prepare families for long-term success. Down payment assistance is a critical component of that model, removing the financial barrier that often prevents otherwise qualified families from completing their journey to homeownership.

student opportunity, advancement, and resilience (SOAR) fund

The Student Opportunity, Advancement, and Resilience (SOAR) Fund helps Rockingham County students overcome barriers that stand in the way of learning and success. From clothing and hygiene items to field trips, club fees, groceries, and more — SOAR provides quick, compassionate support so every student can fully participate in school life.

Requests can be submitted by school staff who know students best — including teachers, counselors, social workers, bus drivers, and administrators. Funds are used for individual student needs only.

beginning teacher support program

The project provides comprehensive, individualized support for beginning teachers through coaching, professional development, high-quality instructional resources, and mentoring. It seeks to cultivate effective, well-supported educators who are committed to student achievement in Rockingham County Schools. Rockingham County Schools currently employs
approximately 800 certified staff members committed to supporting student achievement. Among these educators, 154 are beginning teachers within their first three years of service. Significantly, about 80% of this group have entered the profession through lateral entry pathways—holding degrees in related fields but lacking formal teacher preparation program training. This highlights a critical need for targeted support and professional development to facilitate a successful transition for these educators, ensuring they receive the guidance and resources necessary to become effective classroom teachers. With approximately 12% of teachers leaving the field within three years, this program is critical to improving retention and ensuring consistent, high-quality instruction.
